Burkina Faso has approved free public transportation and healthcare services for families of people who died or were injured while defending the country.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by President Ibrahim Traoré on Thursday as part of measures implementing legislation governing the status of national martyrs and injured veterans.
The government formally recognised 315 people as national martyrs, while 10 others were recognised as “Invalides de la Nation” (Disabled of the Nation).
Government spokesman Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo said the beneficiaries and their families would receive several forms of support, including free access to public transport and healthcare, psychosocial assistance and support for their minor children.
According to the government, the measures are designed to provide sustained assistance to vulnerable families and dependants while honouring those who lost their lives or suffered injuries during the country’s recent political, social and security crises.
Authorities said the initiative reflects the government’s emphasis on national solidarity and the defence of Burkina Faso.
The cabinet also approved the establishment of a new public institution responsible for maintaining government buildings and adopted measures aimed at strengthening the regulatory framework governing non-governmental organisations.
In the health sector, the government approved a draft law establishing a new public health code to replace legislation dating back to 1994.
The proposed code covers areas including private healthcare, palliative care, health surveillance and pharmaceutical regulation. It also provides for the establishment of a health reserve corps.
The latest measures form part of the government’s broader efforts to reform public institutions and strengthen social support for citizens affected by the country’s ongoing security challenges.
