Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has said Spain will not take part in a US-backed “Board of Peace” for Gaza proposed by former US President Donald Trump.
Speaking after an extraordinary EU summit in Brussels, Mr Sánchez said the initiative, launched on Thursday in Davos, sits outside the United Nations framework and does not include the Palestinian Authority.
He said decisions on Palestine’s future must be made by Palestinians themselves, through a process grounded in international law and focused on a two-state solution.
“When we speak about the future of the Palestinians, we do so in coherence and consistency with our commitment to the multilateral order, the United Nations system, and international law,” the Spanish prime minister told reporters.
Mr Sánchez also criticised the United States for what he described as a failure to respect international law, adding that Washington’s actions have increased tensions with the European Union.
Asked about reports of a so-called Greenland framework deal between the US and Denmark, Mr Sánchez said he was not familiar with the details. However, he stressed that the EU was prepared to use the measures available to it to respond “in a proportional way” to any potential threats.
He added that the EU’s immediate priority was to show unity with Denmark and the people of Greenland.
“Today’s first message is unity, solidarity and support for Denmark and for the people of Greenland,” he said.
