Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing prolonged internal disputes and legal battles within the party.
The governor’s decision was announced in a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
In a letter addressed to the chairman of the NNPP in Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, Mr Yusuf formally notified the party of his resignation, with effect from 25 January 2026.
“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party of my decision to resign my membership,” the letter read.
Mr Yusuf thanked the party for the opportunity it gave him and acknowledged the support he received during his time as a member.
He said persistent leadership disagreements and ongoing court cases had weakened the party’s structure across the country.
“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes,” the governor said, noting that many of the issues were still before the courts.
According to him, the disputes have led to growing divisions and uncertainty within the party at both state and national levels.
“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure, resulting in cracks that appear increasingly irreconcilable,” he added.
The governor said his decision followed careful reflection and was guided by what he described as the best interests of the people of Kano State.
“This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of Kano State,” he said.
Mr Yusuf’s resignation was accompanied by that of 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen in the state.
The NNPP ward secretary in Diso-Chiranchi, Kabiru Zubairu, acknowledged receipt of the resignation letter and praised the governor’s performance in office, particularly in infrastructure development, urban renewal, health, education and economic empowerment.
While conceding that the party was facing internal challenges, Mr Zubairu said the NNPP had no option but to accept the governor’s decision.
