A child has been rescued after falling into a 37-metre-deep well in the eastern Cameroonian city of Bertoua, local residents say.
The incident happened on Tuesday afternoon, when the child reportedly slipped and fell into the uncovered well, shouting for help as they descended. The child’s mother immediately raised the alarm, drawing neighbours to the scene.
Residents said the depth of the well made rescue efforts extremely difficult, as the bottom was not visible and no one initially felt able to descend safely.
Rescue efforts took a dramatic turn when a local man, identified as Song Bosco, volunteered to enter the well. He reportedly climbed down without specialised equipment in an attempt to reach the child.
For about 30 minutes, there was no sound from inside the well, causing growing anxiety among those gathered. Witnesses said fears mounted as time passed with no sign of either the rescuer or the child.
After approximately 45 minutes, Mr Bosco re-emerged from the well carrying the child, to the relief and celebration of onlookers. Both were reported to be alive.
Residents hailed Mr Bosco as a hero, praising his courage and quick action. The child’s mother later expressed her gratitude and promised to reward him for saving her child’s life.
