Ikeja Electric has issued public notice warning traders and business operators in Lagos to vacate spaces located beneath high-voltage electricity lines or face enforcement action.
The power distribution company said kiosks, stalls, workshops and other structures built under 11kV, 33kV, 132kV and 330kV lines must be removed immediately.
It warned that failure to comply could lead to demolition, loss of goods without compensation and possible prosecution.
In the notice, the company cited safety concerns, saying high-voltage electricity poses a serious risk even without direct contact. It noted that power can arc over short distances, particularly during rainfall, increasing the danger of electrocution, fires and severe injuries.
Ikeja Electric also stressed that trading or building within designated right-of-way corridors is prohibited under Lagos State safety regulations, which require such areas to remain clear.
The company said it had identified fresh encroachments in parts of the state, including Shogbesan Street in Alimosho and AIT Road in Alagbado, both of which it described as restricted zones.
Business owners were advised to stop operating under or near high-tension lines, relocate existing structures and report unsafe developments to the authorities.
Ikeja Electric said it would continue to work with government and safety agencies to prevent avoidable incidents, adding that ensuring public safety is a shared responsibility.
