An award-winning television host and journalist, Modele Sara I’m seefa-Yusuf, has announced her intention to seek the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 election in Ogun State.
In an open letter addressed to party leaders and stakeholders on Thursday, Mrs Sarafa-Yusuf said her decision followed “deep reflection and wide consultation.” She stated that she would pursue the nomination through established party structures and with due respect for existing leadership.
The APC chieftain described her aspiration as a “managed transition option,” arguing that the next electoral cycle presents heightened political risks requiring stability and continuity.
“Our generation is being tested by how well we manage growth, equity and continuity,” she wrote. “Ogun State must not merely expand but truly develop — not just for some, but for all.”
Mrs Sarafa-Yusuf said she enjoys a “cordial and respectful” relationship with the incumbent governor, Dapo Abiodun, and other party leaders, stressing that her ambition is not intended to undermine the current administration.
“This is not a rebellion. It is not opportunism. It is not an emotional project,” she stated.
She warned against what she termed “loud politics,” cautioning that while such an approach may secure electoral victories, it could weaken governance and erode investor confidence. According to her, Ogun State’s political culture has historically favoured moderation, balance and institutional respect.
On the agitation for power to shift to Ogun West Senatorial District, Mrs Sarafa-Yusuf acknowledged that the demand is “real” and should not be dismissed. However, she cautioned against allowing zoning debates to escalate into broader instability.
“Our task is not to choose sides emotionally, but to prevent a scenario where zoning becomes a blunt instrument that destabilises the entire state,” she said.
Governorship rotation has remained a recurring issue in Ogun politics, with different senatorial districts seeking increased representation in top elective offices.
If elected, Mrs Sarafa-Yusuf would become the first female governor in Nigeria’s history — a prospect she addressed in her letter.
“Nigeria has never elected a female governor, and I’m aware of the weight of breaking that ceiling,” she wrote. “However, this is not about symbolism. It is about capacity and competence.”
She cited her background in public administration, journalism, and experience across the public and private sectors as preparation for the role, pledging what she described as “consultative but firm and disciplined” leadership.
Mrs Sarafa-Yusuf previously contested the Ogun governorship race in 2022 but did not secure the APC nomination. She noted that she accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity.
“This is not a return driven by unfinished business. It is a response to a different political environment,” she said.
She added that consultations would continue in the coming weeks ahead of the APC primary process, which she expressed hope would be “orderly, credible and unifying.”
