AU Chair Pledges Support to Madagascar Following Cyclone Disaster|LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission has expressed solidarity with Madagascar following the devastation caused by Cyclone Gezani, which has been declared a national disaster by the country’s authorities.

In a statement, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said he was deeply concerned by the impact of the cyclone and extended condolences to families who have lost loved ones. He also conveyed support to those injured, displaced or otherwise affected.

On behalf of the African Union, Mr Youssouf commended the swift response of national authorities and local communities, who he said were working under challenging conditions to assist those affected.

He called on African Union member states, regional economic communities, international partners, humanitarian agencies and the private sector to mobilise financial, material and technical assistance for both immediate relief and long-term reconstruction.

The statement said coordinated continental and international support would be vital in addressing urgent needs, including emergency shelter, food security, healthcare, water and sanitation services, as well as the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure.

The African Union Commission reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with the government of Madagascar, relevant AU bodies and humanitarian partners to support recovery and reconstruction efforts.

It added that the African Union stood united with Madagascar and remained committed to supporting the country’s recovery and long-term development.
