Gas shortages cut Nigeria’s power output to 4.3GW, says system operator |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Nigeria’s electricity generation has fallen to an average of 4.3 gigawatts due to insufficient gas supply to power plants, the country’s grid operator has said.

In a statement issued on 27 February 2026, the Nigerian Electricity System Operator (NISO) said thermal power stations which generate most of the nation’s electricity were operating below capacity because of fuel constraints.

The operator said the plants require about 1.63 million standard cubic feet of gas per day to function optimally. However, as of 23 February, only 692,000 million standard cubic feet had been supplied, representing less than 65% of required volumes.

NISO said the supply gap had reduced electricity allocations to distribution companies and led to load shedding in order to maintain grid stability.

The agency added that it is working with relevant stakeholders to address the gas shortfall and increase power generation capacity.
