A man has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a teacher at a secondary school in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State in north-central Nigeria.
The suspect was detained by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) following the incident at Junior Secondary School, Akerebiata, on Wednesday.
According to reports, the man, said to be the father of a student, went to the school premises and confronted a teacher, identified as Ismail, over the alleged punishment of his son. The confrontation reportedly escalated into a physical altercation.
Video footage seen by local media showed the teacher with torn clothing, as the incident caused panic among students and staff and briefly disrupted academic activities.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Ilorin East, Comrade Saka Saafi O. Adanla, confirmed the incident and said the union was monitoring developments closely.
He commended the intervention of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board, adding that the case has been taken to a court of competent jurisdiction. He urged teachers and members of the public to remain calm as the legal process takes its course.
Officials of the NSCDC were said to have arrived at the school shortly after the incident, arresting the suspect and escorting him away to prevent any further breakdown of law and order.
