The son of Iran’s recently killed dictator reportedly owns two luxury apartments overlooking the Israeli embassy in London, raising concerns among experts about a possible “serious security breach.”
Mojtaba Khamenei widely tipped to succeed his father, Ali Khamenei, as Iran’s next Ayatollah owns the properties in Kensington, west London, with an estimated combined value of more than £50 million.
The sixth- and seventh-floor apartments, which include servants’ quarters on the ground floor, are located a short distance from Kensington Palace, the official residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Khamenei, 56, is believed to have owned the two apartments since 2014. However, his ownership only became public following a year-long investigation by the news channel Bloomberg.
The investigation also revealed that Khamenei allegedly owns 11 mansions in Hampstead, north London, through a frontman and a shell company registered in the Isle of Man.
According to the report, Khamenei has amassed a global portfolio of properties worth hundreds of millions of pounds.
Bloomberg further reported that the funds used to purchase the properties came from Iran’s sanction-busting oil programme.
The revelation that Khamenei a senior figure within the feared Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) owns apartments overlooking the Israeli embassy has raised concerns that the properties could have been used to monitor or spy on the diplomatic mission.
