A dispatch rider has died after being struck by a diesel tanker along the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway in Lagos, authorities have said.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said the crash occurred on Wednesday near the Cele Bridge corridor, involving a fully loaded HOWO tanker and a motorcycle.
According to officials, the tanker rammed into the dispatch rider while in motion, trapping him beneath the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
LASTMA officers at the scene quickly secured the area, placing cones and caution tape to prevent further accidents and manage traffic flow along the busy route.
The tanker was impounded, but the driver fled shortly after the incident, authorities said.
Police from the Ijesha Division later arrived and took over the investigation. The victim’s body was recovered and transported to a morgue in Yaba, while the damaged motorcycle and tanker were handed over to the police.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the incident as “deeply distressing” and extended condolences to the victim’s family.
He called for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash and ensure accountability.
