NAFDAC Moves to Cut Sodium Levels in Processed Foods Amid Rising Health Concerns |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has convened a high-level stakeholder engagement on the proposed Reduction of Sodium in Pre-Packaged Foods Regulations 2026, as part of efforts to tackle the growing burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases in Nigeria.

The initiative is aimed at reducing excessive sodium consumption, a major risk factor associated with hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and stroke. It aligns with global health standards focused on improving dietary habits and population health outcomes.

Under the proposed regulations, NAFDAC plans to set maximum sodium limits for selected categories of processed and pre-packaged foods.

The framework also emphasizes the need for clear and transparent product labelling, while encouraging manufacturers to reformulate their products to meet healthier standards.

NAFDAC noted that the move is in response to shifting dietary patterns in Nigeria, particularly the increasing consumption of processed foods, which has led to higher sodium intake among the population.

The agency stressed that the regulations are designed to empower consumers to make informed food choices and to strengthen the country’s food safety system.

Speaking at the engagement, Director-General Mojisola Adeyeye underscored the importance of collaboration in the implementation process.

She called on industry stakeholders, public health professionals, and consumer advocacy groups to work collectively to ensure compliance and long-term sustainability.

Adeyeye reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to an inclusive and evidence-based regulatory approach, describing the initiative as a critical step toward promoting healthier diets, preventing avoidable diseases, and enhancing the overall well-being of Nigerians.
