Operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce have arrested several suspected street urchins, popularly known as “Omotaku,” during an enforcement operation at Marwa Bus Stop in the Lekki area of the state.
The arrests were made following an incident involving a truck driver whose vehicle had broken down. According to reports, the driver was allegedly confronted by the suspects, who attempted to extort him. The group reportedly threatened to remove parts of the vehicle, including the battery, side mirrors, and jack, while also demanding the driver’s phone and cash.
Taskforce officials, who were on routine patrol and acting on credible intelligence, swiftly intervened and apprehended the suspects at the scene.
Authorities disclosed that the Marwa Bus Stop corridor had previously been identified as a hotspot for criminal activities, including theft, harassment, and extortion, perpetrated by street urchins. The operation was therefore part of a targeted effort to address growing concerns raised by motorists and residents in the area.
The enforcement action forms part of the second phase of an ongoing crackdown on criminal elements across the state. The operation, which began earlier in the week, is being coordinated under the leadership of the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele.
Officials confirmed that normalcy has been restored in the affected area following the raid. All suspects arrested during the operation are expected to be charged w in accordance with the Lagos State Special Offences Law.
The Taskforce reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against criminal activities, particularly those involving street gangs and extortionists.
