Greece to Ban Social Media Use for Under-15s from 2027 |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The government of Greece has announced plans to prohibit children under the age of 15 from accessing social media platforms beginning January 1, 2027.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis disclosed the decision in a video message shared on TikTok, describing the move as “difficult but necessary” in response to growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on young people.

According to Mitsotakis, the policy aims to address rising cases of online addiction, disrupted sleep patterns, and increasing anxiety among teenagers. He noted that children are under mounting pressure from constant comparisons and interactions on social media, which can negatively affect their mental well-being.

The Prime Minister added that discussions with parents highlighted widespread concerns about excessive screen time and its psychological effects on children.

Greece’s move follows a broader global trend, as governments intensify scrutiny of social media use among minors. Australia recently became the first nation to introduce similar restrictions, setting a precedent that other countries are now closely monitoring.

The proposed ban is expected to spark debate among policymakers, parents, and technology companies over how best to protect children in the digital age while balancing access to online platforms.
