Former President of Botswana, Festus Mogae, has been hospitalised in the capital city, Gaborone, according to an official statement released by the Office of the President.
In the statement issued on Tuesday, authorities confirmed that the 85-year-old former leader is currently receiving medical care but remains in a stable condition.
“The Office of the President informs members of the public that His Excellency Festus Gontebanye Mogae… is unwell and is currently receiving medical care at a hospital in Gaborone,” the statement read.
Officials reassured citizens that updates would be provided should there be any significant developments regarding his health.
The presidency also called on the public to keep the elder statesman in their thoughts and prayers.
Festus Mogae served as Botswana’s president from 1998 to 2008, earning international recognition for his leadership in economic management and his strong response to the HIV/AIDS crisis.
He was awarded the prestigious Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership in 2008.
