Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has named new heads for several federal education institutions, as his administration moves to reinforce governance across the country’s public education sector.

The announcements were made by Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy.

The appointments, announced on Wednesday, affect the National Examination Council, the National Board for Technical Education, the Federal Polytechnic in N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State, and the National Library of Nigeria.

Professor Modupe Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State and a retired academic from the Obafemi Awolowo University, has been named board chairman of NECO.

The council oversees Nigeria’s Senior Secondary Certificate Examination, one of the country’s key school-leaving qualifications.

Professor Babatunde Salako, who led the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research for eight years, has been appointed to chair the National Board for Technical Education. The board regulates polytechnic and technical college education across the country.

In Plateau State, Engr. Dr Bongfa Binfa has been named Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, succeeding the institution’s founding rector. Dr Binfa, a mechanical engineer with a doctorate from Malaysia, was previously deputy rector at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas in Bonny, Rivers State.

Professor Chinwe Anunobi will continue as head of the National Library of Nigeria after the President renewed her appointment for a further five years. Since taking office in 2021, she has led efforts to modernise the institution, including developing a national digital library and advancing the construction of a new national headquarters in Abuja.
