Sanwo-Olu Hails Lagosians as Sanitation Day Revival Draws Massive Turnout Across State|LAGOS EYE NEWS

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has praised residents across the state for their overwhelming participation in the revival of the monthly Environmental Sanitation Day held last Saturday, describing the turnout as a strong demonstration of civic responsibility and the enduring Spirit of Lagos.

This is contained in a statement on Sunday by Gbenga Omotoso
Commissioner for Information and Strategy.

He said from Ikorodu to Badagry, Lagos Island to the Mainland, and from Alimosho to Ikeja and Agege, residents trooped out in their numbers early Saturday morning to clean their surroundings, signalling broad public support for the government’s renewed push for environmental hygiene.

“I thank Lagosians who joined the call to clean up our environment as a sure step to good health,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said. “That is patriotic; it is the Spirit of Lagos that we often speak about. We should continue to walk that path.”

While commending the public, the governor also seized the opportunity to warn against indiscriminate refuse dumping, urging residents to sustain clean habits especially as the rainy season approaches. The Nigeria Meteorological Agency has forecast heavy rains across the country this year, raising concerns about flooding in low-lying communities across Lagos.

In anticipation of the rains, the state government has launched a comprehensive cleanup of gutters and drainage systems statewide to minimise flood risk.

The Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources and the Ministry of Information and Strategy have jointly rolled out a public awareness campaign targeting indiscriminate waste disposal and the illegal blocking of drainage channels.
