The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed shock and deep concern following a deadly attack on a church gathering in Eda Oniyo Ekiti, where gunmen reportedly killed a pastor and abducted several worshippers during an open-air crusade.
In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a “heinous act” and a disturbing assault on human life and religious freedom.
CAN noted that the victims had gathered peacefully for worship but were met with violence.
The association extended condolences to the family of the slain pastor and expressed solidarity with the victims and the wider Christian community in Ekiti State. It also called for the immediate and safe release of those abducted.
CAN linked the attack to a growing wave of insecurity, referencing a recent incident in Yagba West Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly abducted residents, including clergy and their families. The body warned that such repeated attacks highlight a worsening security crisis in the country.
Raising concerns over public safety, the association emphasized that no individual should live in fear and that places of worship must not become targets for criminal activities.
CAN urged the government and security agencies to act swiftly and decisively by apprehending those responsible and ensuring justice is served.
It also called for intensified security presence, particularly in rural and vulnerable communities, alongside improved intelligence efforts to prevent further attacks.
The association stressed the need for Nigerians to collectively reject violence, noting that attacks on worshippers reflect a troubling disregard for life and societal values.
CAN concluded by calling on authorities to address the situation urgently, warning against normalizing the killing and abduction of innocent citizens. It also offered prayers for the bereaved families, the safe return of those in captivity, and the restoration of peace and security across the nation.
