President Bola Tinubu has endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the consensus governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State ahead of the 2027 elections, following high-level political consultations at the State House in Abuja.
The endorsement came on Wednesday after members of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC) visited the President in Abuja, where the party’s succession arrangements for Lagos were discussed with key APC stakeholders.
Hamzat, who has served as Deputy Governor under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, subsequently confirmed that his governorship ambition had received the blessing of the President, saying consultations and alignments within the party were well advanced.
Confirming the endorsement, Governor Sanwo-Olu said President Bola Tinubu officially endorsed my Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, as the APC candidate for the 2027 Lagos gubernatorial election.
According to him, Femi has been a reliable partner and seeing him receive the President’s backing is a bold statement of trust, confidence and assurance by our leader, that he is truly the best man for the job.
“I have no doubt that the vision for a greater Lagos we started together will have the leadership it needs to continue. There is still much to be done but the path ahead for Lagos is clear, he said.
He said that the backing of major political figures, including President Tinubu, had strengthened Dr Hamzat confidence going into the race.
The GAC, a powerful political caucus widely regarded as the inner council of Lagos APC, is known for shaping the direction of governorship succession in the state. Its endorsement of a consensus candidate typically signals the beginning of a coordinated party push ahead of the primaries.
The development marks the earliest and most definitive signal yet of the direction of Lagos APC’s 2027 political calculations, as the ruling party moves to consolidate its grip on Nigeria’s commercial capital in the next electoral cycle.
