The Supreme Court of Nigeria has affirmed the conviction and 12-year prison sentence handed to a 42-year-old man for the rape of his 15-year-old domestic worker, marking a major victory in the fight against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), which disclosed the development, said the apex court delivered its final judgment on May 8, 2026, upholding the earlier conviction of the offender.
According to the Agency, the incident occurred on March 11, 2017, when the convict allegedly took advantage of the absence of his wife and children to sexually assault the teenage victim at their residence. He was also accused of threatening the victim’s life to stop her from speaking out.
The victim later reported the incident to a school official, prompting NAPTIP’s intervention and the arraignment of the suspect on November 11, 2017, under Section 1(2) of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPPA).
NAPTIP described the Supreme Court judgment as a strong message that perpetrators of violence against children and vulnerable persons will eventually face justice.
