WAEC says exams going ahead despite staff protest |LAGOS EYE NEWS

West African Examinations Council in Nigeria says the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination is continuing as scheduled, even as some of its workers stage a protest.

The council, in a statement issued on Wednesday, said management had put in measures to ensure no disruption to the examination timetable and was in dialogue with the protesting union.

WAEC said it respected the workers’ right to peaceful protest but described as false some of the grievances the union had raised publicly.

“The Council, as a law-abiding organisation, respects the rights of unions and staff members to peacefully express their grievances, within the ambit of the law. Thus, every necessary step has been taken to address the issue and safeguard the integrity, credibility and smooth conduct of the examination.

The council said the reduction in examination days was linked to a decision to cut the number of subjects it offers from 76 to 38 and not to any attempt to shortchange workers. It also denied allegations of unfair dismissals and disproportionate sanctions, saying all staff disciplinary matters followed established guidelines.

The use of contract examination officers, which appeared to be another point of contention, was justified by WAEC as a means of managing growing workloads.

“the engagement of contract Examination Officers and Assistant Examination Officers is a measure to manage increasing workloads and ensure smooth operations of the Council’s processes across the Sub-region.

“We understand that the situation may cause panic or anxiety, but we wish to state categorically that the future of our candidates remains our topmost priority. In line with the above, Management of the Council is in dialogue with the union. Furthermore, we have put in place adequate measures to ensure that the examination schedule remains undisturbed.

“On this note, we urge members of the public to disregard any rumour or misinformation capable creating confusion regarding the examination. Every necessary information is available on our verified and accredited channels of communication, WAEC concluded.
