President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has condemned the reported killing of one of the teachers abducted during a recent attack on schools in Oyo State, describing the act as barbaric.
The President gave the assurance on Monday while reacting to the abduction of staff and pupils from the Esiele community in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
Gunmen had invaded the community last Friday, abducting teachers, students, and pupils from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, as well as L.A. Primary School.
According to the Presidency, security agencies have intensified rescue operations aimed at securing the release of all victims and apprehending those responsible for the attack.
President Tinubu sympathised with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, the state government, and residents over the incident, assuring them of the Federal Government’s support.
“I am saddened by the reported killing of one of the teachers kidnapped by the gunmen who invaded the community. I sympathise with Governor Seyi Makinde and commend the steps he has taken on the matter. I sympathise with the families of the kidnapped victims,” the President said.
He stated that the Federal Government is collaborating with the Oyo State Government to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining victims.
Tinubu also commended the Inspector-General of Police and the Commissioners of Police in Oyo and Kwara states for their swift response, including the deployment of tactical teams and the Intelligence Response Team (IRT).
“The IGP, following my instructions, is personally leading the tech-driven operation. We expect a breakthrough soon. The bandits and all their local collaborators will be fished out and made to face the full wrath of the law,” he added.
The President further renewed calls for the establishment of state police, saying the growing cases of kidnapping underscore the need for decentralised policing to improve security in underserved communities.
“Cases of kidnapping further make imperative the establishment of state police to man some of our underserved areas. The National Assembly should accelerate the enactment of the law creating state police,” Tinubu stated.
