Trump announces 3-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia |LAGOS EYE NEWS

US President Donald Trump has announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, scheduled to run from May 9 to May 11, as efforts continue to end the ongoing war.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the temporary truce would include a suspension of “all kinetic activity” and a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 prisoners from each side.

He expressed optimism that the pause in fighting could pave the way for a broader peace agreement.

“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought war,” Trump wrote, adding that negotiations were still ongoing.

According to reports by Reuters, Trump said the ceasefire request was made directly by him and thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for agreeing to the arrangement.

The ceasefire coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations marking the Soviet Union’s role in World War II. Trump noted that Ukraine also played a significant role in the war effort, saying both nations shared historical ties to the occasion.

However, uncertainty remains over the durability of the truce. Previous temporary ceasefires announced during the conflict have collapsed amid accusations of violations from both Moscow and Kyiv.

Despite the announcement, reports emerging after the ceasefire period indicated renewed attacks, with Ukrainian officials accusing Russian forces of launching hundreds of drones shortly after the truce expired.
