Players and officials of Rivers United FC were involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday while traveling to Awka, Anambra State, for their President Federation Cup Round of 16 match against Nasarawa United.
According to a statement issued by the club’s Media Officer, Charles Mayuku, the incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed from its camp.
The club confirmed that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident. However, no fatalities or life-threatening injuries were recorded.
“All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the statement said.
Rivers United management noted that the safety, health, and well-being of its players and officials remain a top priority. The club’s medical team is reportedly monitoring those involved, while management continues to assess the situation and make necessary arrangements.
The club also expressed appreciation to fans, partners, and members of the football community for their concern, prayers, and support following the incident.
