The 36 state governors have reaffirmed their support for the establishment of state police, stressing that the proposed security framework must be constitutionally grounded, consistent with Nigeria’s federal structure, and protective of citizens’ rights.
The position was reached at a meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) in Abuja, where governors said ongoing consultations with state Attorneys-General on constitutional amendments and operational guidelines would help strengthen their collective stance on state policing.
The renewed advocacy comes amid legislative progress on the proposal, following the passage of a constitutional amendment bill on state police by the House of Representatives and its successful second reading in the Senate.
The governors also reiterated their commitment to reforms in the power sector, endorsing the proposed National Solar Super-Grid initiative aimed at expanding electricity access through large-scale solar power generation and a nationwide transmission network.
According to the forum, the initiative has the potential to drive industrialisation, enhance energy security, strengthen state electricity markets, and stimulate economic growth across the country.
In addition, the NGF pledged support for the National Nutrition 774 Initiative, designed to combat child malnutrition and improve nutrition outcomes nationwide.
The governors also backed continued collaboration with the Federal Government and the World Bank to boost agricultural productivity, strengthen food security, and advance early childhood development programmes.
