The Nigeria Police Force has raised concern over the growing spread of misinformation surrounding security operations, warning that false narratives circulating on digital platforms are increasingly capable of undermining public trust and compromising law enforcement efforts.
This follows recent viral content, including a video from Katsina State, which falsely alleged that police officers were seen interacting with armed bandits.
The Force, however, clarified that the individuals seen in the footage were not bandits but duly recognized members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and registered hunters supporting security operations in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State.
Reacting to the growing trend of misinformation, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, said the nation’s digital space is now saturated with what he described as “keyboard warriors” who push narratives on security matters without understanding the operational realities, tactical deployments, and strategic decisions involved.
He warned that false reporting and misleading commentary, particularly during active security operations, can distort facts, trigger public anxiety, embolden criminal elements, and frustrate the work of security agencies.
According to him, many of those spreading such narratives fail to appreciate the sacrifices being made daily by officers of the Nigeria Police Force and other security personnel working under difficult and dangerous conditions to protect lives and property.
CSP Iniedu maintained that operational silence is often more responsible than releasing inaccurate information that could mislead the public or jeopardize ongoing security efforts.
He urged media practitioners, digital content creators, and members of the public to exercise restraint and verify facts before sharing security-related information.
The Police spokesperson also warned against allowing digital platforms to be weaponized for the spread of subversive ideologies, dissident narratives, and deliberate misinformation capable of weakening national security.
The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to responsible communication and called for greater collaboration between citizens, the media, and security agencies in addressing evolving security threats across the country.
