A dispute that began following France’s World Cup victory over Paraguay has escalated beyond football, drawing reactions from political leaders and football authorities.
The controversy erupted after Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla allegedly made racist remarks directed at France captain Kylian Mbappé.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that the French forward responded with a strongly worded statement, condemning the senator’s comments and accusing her of tarnishing Paraguay’s image on the global stage.
“Mrs. Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, a country that has shown passion and honor throughout the competition,” Mbappé said.
He continued: “Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country.”
Mbappé also vowed to continue speaking out against racism, adding: “I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.”
The exchange has since sparked wider diplomatic and sporting reactions, with the French presidency, the Paraguayan government, and FIFA all becoming involved as the controversy continues to unfold.
