Four people, including two children, were killed on Friday morning after a train collided with a school minibus in the town of Buggenhout in northern Belgium.
Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister, Maxime Prévot, confirmed the incident in a post on X, describing it as a tragic accident.
“A tragic collision between a train and a school bus took place in Buggenhout this morning. Four people have been killed, including two children,” Prévot wrote.
According to Belgian authorities, the minibus was carrying seven children, a supervisor and the driver at the time of the crash.
Police spokesperson Frédéric Sacré said the collision occurred at about 8:08 a.m. when the minibus was struck by a train that was approaching its next scheduled stop, approximately one kilometre from the crossing.
“The impact was extremely violent,” Sacré told AFP, describing the incident as “dramatic.”
Images aired by Belgian media showed the heavily damaged minibus lying on its side beside the railway line, while emergency responders erected tents around the crash site as rescue and recovery operations continued.
Belgian have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision.
