Lagos pensioners have taken to the streets to demand the payment of outstanding entitlements and an upward review of their monthly pensions.
The protest comes amid growing concerns over the financial difficulties faced by retirees, with some pensioners saying their post-retirement income is insufficient to meet their basic needs.
One retired director, while lamenting her financial situation, disclosed that her monthly earnings had dropped drastically after retirement.
According to her, she earned N520,000 monthly before retiring as a director but now receives only N58,782 as pension.
«“My own salary is so ridiculous. I retired as a director; I was earning N520,000. Now I am earning N58,782,” she said.»
The development has sparked concerns over the welfare of retired civil servants and the adequacy of pension payments to sustain retirees after decades of public service.
The situation has also renewed calls for governments at all levels to address outstanding pension obligations and ensure that retirees receive benefits that can support them in their old age.
The concerns have further prompted calls for serving civil servants to make independent retirement plans and consider additional sources of financial security rather than relying solely on government pensions.
The pensioners are urging the Lagos State Governor to review their allowances and settle outstanding entitlements to cushion the economic hardship faced by retirees.
