Lagos State Deputy Governor and All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Dr Kadiri Hamzat, has described the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Olu Jacobs, as a significant loss to Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Hamzat stated this on Thursday when he, alongside his wife, Oluremi Hamzat, paid a condolence visit to veteran actress Dame Joke Silva and the family of the late actor.
The family announced the death of Olu Jacobs on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with his wife, Joke Silva, and their son, Olusoji Jacobs, confirming his passing. The veteran actor died at the age of 84.
Speaking during the condolence visit, Hamzat described Jacobs as a pioneer and remarkable actor whose contributions to Nigerian entertainment had touched generations.
“We lost a true icon. Olu Jacobs was a pioneer and a remarkable actor whose work touched generations.
“He left a lasting legacy in Nigerian entertainment, and his depth and talent were truly exceptional.”
The Deputy Governor expressed sympathy to the bereaved family, saying he offered prayers for them during the difficult period.
Hamzat added: “May God grant him peaceful rest and give his loved ones the strength to bear this great loss.”
Jacobs, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, had a career spanning more than five decades across British theatre and television and the Nigerian film industry. He was also a co-founder of the Lufodo Group alongside Joke Silva and was honoured with the national award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.
His death has continued to attract tributes from political leaders, actors and other stakeholders in Nigeria’s creative industry.
