Dubai has declared a 10-day period of official mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a senior member of the ruling Al Maktoum family, military leader and businessman.
The announcement was made on Monday by the Court of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Ruler of Dubai. Flags across the emirate will fly at half-mast throughout the mourning period.
Sheikh Ahmed, who died at the age of 76, was the youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum and the younger brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
He served as Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and held key positions in Dubai’s business and real estate sectors, including leadership roles at A.R.M. Holding and the Dubai Real Estate Centre.
A graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, Sheikh Ahmed also played a significant role in the UAE’s military development and was widely recognised for his contributions to sports, particularly horse racing and football, serving as chairman of Al Wasl Football Club.
Paying tribute to his brother, Sheikh Mohammed described Sheikh Ahmed as a cherished family member who would remain in their prayers and hearts.
UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan also extended condolences, noting Sheikh Ahmed’s longstanding contributions to the development of the UAE.
