The Lagos State Government has advised residents living in low-lying, riverine, coastal and other flood-prone communities to move to safer and higher ground following a seven-day flood alert issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA).
The alert covers the period from September 19 to 25, 2026, with Lagos among 15 states identified as being at risk of riverine flooding.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, urged Lagos residents to take the warning seriously and act before floodwaters rise.
According to Wahab, communities requiring heightened vigilance include Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah, Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront and Jetty Terminal B, as well as settlements along the Ogun River and other waterways.
He also listed Isheri North, Kara, Itowolo, Ajegunle, Majidun, Ogolonto, parts of Agboyi and other communities downstream of Isheri Olofin among areas that should remain on high alert.
Wahab urged residents in vulnerable locations to relocate to safer and elevated areas whenever necessary, stressing that residents should not wait until floodwaters rise before taking preventive action.
“No property is worth risking a life,” he said.
The commissioner said the state government was intensifying the monitoring of rainfall and river levels while working with relevant agencies to strengthen flood prevention and emergency response measures.
He also advised residents to keep drains and waterways free of refuse, avoid walking or driving through flooded areas and rely on official flood forecasts and safety advisories.
The warning comes as NiHSA continues to issue flood-risk information and forecasts to support early preparedness and disaster-risk reduction across the country.
