Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force deployed tear gas to disperse a group of protesters in the Maitama area of Abuja earlier today. The demonstrators, who had congregated to voice their concerns over a range of national issues, were scattered as police intervened.
The protest, part of a nationwide series of demonstrations organized by the Take-It-Back Movement and allied civil society groups, aimed to highlight several critical issues. These included allegations of the misuse of the Cybercrime Act, the escalating economic hardship facing Nigerians, and the perceived “state of emergency” in Rivers State.
Protesters marched through the streets of the Federal Capital Territory, carrying placards bearing messages such as “Stop the Repression” and “Let Us Breathe,” expressing their dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, was also present at the protest, demonstrating his support for the movement.
The peaceful demonstration was disrupted when police deployed tear gas, causing the crowd to disperse.
