Reports Claim Death of Ali Khamenei; Global Leaders React |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Unconfirmed reports circulating on social media have claimed that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has died following what sources describe as a coordinated military and intelligence operation.

There has been no immediate confirmation from Iranian state media or independent international monitors. The BBC has not been able to verify the claims.

In a statement attributed to former US President Donald Trump, he said that Khamenei had been killed in an operation involving US intelligence capabilities and close coordination with Israel.

The statement described the operation as relying on “highly sophisticated tracking systems” and characterised the development as an opportunity for the Iranian people to “take back their country.”

Mr Trump also suggested that members of Iran’s security forces, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), may seek immunity and could potentially align with what he termed “Iranian patriots.”

The statement further indicated that military operations, including what were described as “heavy and pinpoint bombing” campaigns, would continue “as long as necessary” to achieve what he called “peace throughout the Middle East and the world.”

Iranian authorities have not issued any official confirmation or denial regarding the reported death of Ayatollah Khamenei. State-run outlets, including Press TV and the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), had not carried any reports confirming such developments at the time of writing.

The Supreme Leader, who has held Iran’s highest political and religious office since 1989, plays a central role in the country’s political system, overseeing the armed forces and having the final say on major state policies.

The Israeli government has not publicly commented on the claims. A spokesperson for the US State Department said it was “monitoring developments closely” but declined to provide details.

Analysts warn that any confirmed death of Iran’s Supreme Leader particularly under circumstances involving foreign military action could have significant implications for regional stability, including heightened tensions across the Middle East.

Experts at institutions such as the Brookings Institution and Chatham House say that sudden leadership changes in Iran could trigger internal power struggles, especially involving the IRGC and senior clerical authorities.

Given the absence of independent verification and official confirmation from Tehran, observers urge caution in assessing the claims. In recent years, misinformation and unverified reports have frequently circulated during periods of heightened regional tension.

The situation remains fluid, and further details are expected as governments and international bodies respond to the reports.
