The Nigeria Police Force has launched a month-long nationwide online awareness campaign on online safety and cyber hygiene aimed at strengthening digital security and promoting responsible online behaviour among Nigerians.
The campaign, spearheaded by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), is themed “Real Odogwu no dey hide face.” It is designed to educate the public on the growing threats of cybercrime and encourage proactive digital vigilance.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Abuja, the Director of the NPF-NCCC, Ifeanyi Uche Henry, said cyber threats are increasingly borderless and evolving, stressing that the initiative was introduced in response to the rising incidents of identity theft, romance scams, business email compromise (BEC), sextortion and phishing targeting Nigerians.
Henry noted that many cyber attacks succeed due to a lack of public awareness, urging citizens to adopt responsible online practices to protect their digital identities and personal information.
He also warned individuals engaged in cybercrime to desist, adding that the centre’s Cyberhawk teams are deploying advanced digital tracking tools to identify and prosecute offenders in line with the law.
Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, commended the support of the UK National Crime Agency and the City of London Police, noting that the collaboration highlights the importance of international partnerships in combating cybercrime and securing digital spaces.
The police therefore urged Nigerians to remain cyber-aware by verifying information online, protecting their devices and digital identities, and safeguarding sensitive financial details such as ATM PINs, OTPs and BVNs.
The force also advised the public to adopt strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, avoid suspicious links or urgent messages, and use secure channels when sharing sensitive personal or corporate information.
