Governor Ademola Adeleke has praised the pace and quality of the ongoing remodelling of the Osogbo Stadium, revealing that the facility’s seating capacity will increase from 4,000 to 15,000 upon completion.
The governor made this known after an early morning project review session, part of a series of daily inspections that began last week.
Mallam Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson to the state governor said the expanded capacity would position Osun State to host major sporting events, thereby boosting sports development across the state.
According to him, the upgraded stadium will meet the requirements to host both local and international competitions, creating opportunities for young athletes to develop their talents on a larger platform.
Governor Adeleke also expressed satisfaction with the involvement of foreign technical partners collaborating with local contractors to ensure the facility meets global standards, including those set by FIFA. He added that achieving such standards would pave the way for eventual FIFA certification.
He stressed that adherence to international best practices remains a priority in the remodelling process, noting that the integration of local and international expertise would help position Osun within Nigeria’s mainstream sports development landscape.
The governor further disclosed plans to operationalise the Osun Sports Trust Fund, stating that efforts are ongoing to meet legal requirements and establish the necessary policy framework. He added that steps are also being taken to fully activate the Osun State Sports Commission as part of broader reforms in the sector.
Reaffirming his commitment to sports development, Adeleke said his administration envisions a modern sports sector equipped with world-class facilities, a motivated workforce, and expanded opportunities for athletes.
He commended the contractor for the progress made so far and also lauded Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi, who doubles as Commissioner for Sports, for his dedication to the successful delivery of the project.
