….First Lady Emphasises Commitment to Welfare of Vulnerable Children
The Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) has donated items valued at ₦60 million to eleven (11) orphanage homes spread across Lagos State, as part of its annual humanitarian outreach programme aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable children and orphanage caregivers.
The presentation ceremony, held on Tuesday at the Banquet Hall of the First Lady’s Office in Alausa, Ikeja, marked the sixth edition of the laudable initiative, which has since its inception in 2020, extended support to over 70 orphanage homes across the State.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the First Lady of Lagos State, Mrs. Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, described the initiative as a demonstration of compassion, unity, and unwavering commitment to enhancing the quality of life of less privileged members of society.
Mrs. Sanwo-Olu noted that the intervention has recorded a remarkable growth trajectory, expanding from ₦5.5 million at inception to the present ₦60 million in 2026, a development she attributed to increased institutional commitment to social welfare and community development.
“The beneficiary homes were carefully selected through a transparent and inclusive process involving a 33-member selection committee drawn from the five IBILE divisions Ikorodu, Badagry, Ikeja, Lagos, and Epe to ensure fairness and accountability in the distribution of these resources,” the First Lady stated.
The items distributed, which were tailored to address the specific needs of each beneficiary home, included smart televisions, deep freezers, standing fans, mattresses, 5KVA inverters, canopies, solar-powered systems, food supplies, beverages, toiletries, cerebral palsy wheelchairs, baby diapers, and clothing materials.
According to Mrs. Sanwo-Olu, the donations, which were based on detailed needs assessments, are aimed at improving living conditions within the orphanage facilities, providing essential support to caregivers, and creating conducive environments for the development of the children.
The First Lady commended members of the selection committee and COWLSO leadership for their dedication and tireless efforts, while appealing to government agencies, the private sector, and well-meaning individuals to sustain and intensify support for the vulnerable and marginalised members of society.
The beneficiary homes included Brainy Kid Foundation, House of Mercy Children’s Home, Poget Care Homes Foundation, Friends of Beth Torrey Home, Child Lifeline, Lagos State Rehabilitation and Training Centre, Shayofunmi Care Agency, Echoes of Mercy and Hope Foundation, Street Child Care & Welfare, Cerebral Palsy Centre, and Destiny Trust Homes.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Funmi Adegun of Miracles of Mercy and Hope Foundation expressed profound gratitude to the Lagos State Government, describing the support as remarkable and transformative.
She noted that the intervention, which included solar-powered inverters, refurbished facilities, and essential household items, would significantly enhance living conditions within the orphanage homes.
Similarly, Mrs. Aduke Gomez of Child Lifeline in Ikorodu praised the donation of solar power systems, noting that the infrastructure would enable children to engage in academic activities during evening hours and significantly improve educational outcomes.
She added that improved access to electricity would substantially enhance comfort and general well-being within the facility.
