EFCC Raises Alarm Over Rising Cases of Impersonation and Fraudulent Activities |LAGOS EYE NEWS

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a public warning over a growing wave of criminal activities carried out by individuals impersonating its officers across the country.

In a statement released by the Commission, intelligence reports indicate that fraudsters are deploying increasingly sophisticated methods to tarnish the EFCC’s image. One of the emerging tactics involves criminal gangs targeting young people at popular eateries and recreational spots in major cities. These impostors allegedly ambush unsuspecting victims, accuse them of internet fraud without basis, and seize their valuables. The suspects often wear fake EFCC uniforms and transport victims to locations designed to resemble official EFCC offices.

The Commission also disclosed the activities of another group of criminals who reportedly harass motorists based on their vehicle number plates. These individuals, sometimes armed, allegedly extort money from victims under false accusations.

In addition, the EFCC highlighted the role of online impersonators and fraudulent content creators who stage fake “sting operations.” Such content often features dramatized scenes of forced entry, including broken doors and windows, falsely depicting EFCC enforcement actions.

According to the Commission, these misleading portrayals risk deceiving the public and unfairly damaging its reputation.

The EFCC urged citizens to remain vigilant and critically assess claims or incidents involving individuals posing as its officers.

It emphasised that all its operations follow established standard procedures and that there are official channels for reporting grievances against its personnel.

Reaffirming its commitment to combating economic and financial crimes, the Commission called on Nigerians not to allow the actions of impersonators and criminal elements to undermine public trust in its work.
