What was meant to be a dignified visit by Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, turned into a moment many in Kano would rather forget.
In the middle of official engagements, a group of young people staged an unusual protest one that left residents shocked and stirred conversations far beyond the state. Their actions, seen by many as deeply disrespectful, quickly drew criticism and concern about the direction of youth expression in the region.
For Governor Abba Yusuf, the incident was more than a public embarrassment it was a painful reminder of the growing disconnect between tradition and modern expressions of frustration. Speaking during a solemn prayer gathering at the Government House, surrounded by thousands of Qur’anic reciters, he addressed the issue with a tone that mixed disappointment and urgency.
He described the act as alien to the identity of Kano, a place long known for its deep cultural roots and strong moral fabric. To him, the actions of those youths did not just cross a line they misrepresented an entire people.
But beyond condemnation, there was also a plea.
The governor called on young people to see themselves differently not as instruments of protest without purpose, but as carriers of hope and builders of the future.
He warned that when youthful energy is misdirected, it risks being exploited, especially in the heated space of politics.
His message also reached fellow leaders. He urged them to rethink their influence, cautioning against rhetoric or actions that could push young people toward behaviour that undermines their dignity and future.
For many residents, the moment has sparked reflection. It raised difficult questions: How should young people express dissent? Who is responsible for guiding them? And how can a society balance freedom of expression with respect for its cultural values?
In the end, the governor’s call was simple but weighty an appeal for accountability, for apologies, and for a return to the values that once defined the community.
Because for Kano, this wasn’t just about one incident. It was about the kind of future its young people are being shaped to create.
