SANWO-OLU HAILS LASU AS NIGERIA’S MOST SOUGHT-AFTER UNIVERSITY IN 2026 UTME |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has expressed delight over the emergence of Lagos State University (LASU) as the most sought-after university in Nigeria in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to data released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), LASU attracted 84,426 applicants, placing it ahead of other tertiary institutions across the country.

Reacting to the development, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the achievement as a testament to LASU’s growing reputation as a centre of academic excellence, innovation, and global competitiveness.

The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to positioning LASU among the top 10 universities in the world, noting that the institution’s impressive performance reflects the Lagos State Government’s continuous investment in education and human capital development.

“This remarkable achievement is a direct result of our administration’s commitment to creating an enabling academic environment that promotes excellence and prosperity,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The JAMB statistics showed that the University of Lagos (UNILAG) came second with 78,240 applicants, while Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) ranked third with 60,370 applicants.

The University of Ibadan and the University of Benin followed in fourth and fifth positions with 58,895 and 55,425 applicants respectively.

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the management, staff, and students of LASU for sustaining high academic standards and maintaining the institution’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading universities.

He attributed the university’s progress to visionary leadership, dedicated faculty members, and strategic government support through the THEMES Plus Agenda, particularly in the areas of funding, infrastructure, and technological advancement.

The governor also praised the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, for her transformational leadership and commitment to institutional growth.

According to him, Prof. Olatunji-Bello has introduced innovative reforms that have significantly improved the university’s academic standing and attracted national and international recognition.

Sanwo-Olu encouraged staff and students of the institution to remain committed to excellence in order to sustain LASU’s status as the most preferred university in Nigeria.

In recent years, LASU has implemented several reforms aimed at improving academic standards, research development, infrastructure, and student-centred learning, contributing to its consistent ranking among top institutions both locally and internationally.
