Eid Kabir: Cooking Gas Scarcity Deepens as Eid Approaches, Prices Hit ₦1,500/kg |LAGOS EYE NEWS

Cooking gas marketers have raised the alarm over a worsening Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) scarcity across Nigeria, with refill costs climbing to as high as ₦1,500 per kilogram in several parts of the country just days before Muslims mark the Eid el-Kabir festival.

The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) disclosed that operators now pay between ₦25.2 million and ₦26.2 million for 20 metric tonnes of gas, citing supply shortages, logistics challenges, and mounting operational costs as the key drivers of the crisis.

The association warned that the development is compounding financial pressure on households, food vendors, and small businesses, adding that the surge in gas prices is threatening Nigeria’s clean energy transition as many families increasingly abandon cooking gas in favour of firewood and charcoal.

NALPGAM urged the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to take immediate steps to improve supply, resolve distribution bottlenecks, and stabilise prices before the situation worsens further.

A spot check by LAGOS EYE NEWS correspondent at Mobi Gas Station in Abule-Egba on Monday found cooking gas retailing at ₦1,350 per kilogram. Customers at the station voiced strong frustration over the unrelenting rise in the cost of living.

“The level of poverty is very high now. We are buying gas at ₦1,350 per kilogram in Lagos. What is the Tinubu administration doing to ease the burden on citizens? It is no longer pocket-friendly for many of us,” said Olasehinde Akin, one of the customers.

Akin added that only a fraction of salary earners can now afford to buy gas in sufficient quantities. “Many people have resorted to alternatives, especially charcoal, because of the high cost,” he said.

Another customer, Adebimpe Olore, described her shock at the latest price increase. “The last time I bought gas, it was ₦1,250 per kilogram. Coming here today and seeing another increase is disappointing. The quantity I planned to buy has changed because of the new price,” she said.

She appealed to the government to act with urgency. “I am not happy with the way Nigerians are being treated. Something has to be done to reduce the hardship people are facing,” Olore added.

LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that at Agege, Iyana Ipaja, Iju Ishaga some outlet are selling cooking gas between the rate of ₦1,400 and ₦1500.

NALPGAM is calling on the government to intervene urgently to stabilise the market to avoid further hardship on the living standards of Nigerians.
