Amnesty International Urges Nigeria to Halt Alleged Harassment of Ogun Pastor|LAGOS EYE NEWS

Amnesty International Nigeria has urged Nigerian authorities to end what it describes as the intimidation and harassment of Pastor Kayode Olawoye, a cleric and civic advocate known for campaigning for improved road infrastructure in Ogun State.

In a statement released on Tuesday and made available to Lagos Eye News, the human rights organisation condemned the actions of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS), describing the treatment of the pastor as unlawful.

“Subjecting a peaceful advocate for good governance to intimidation by the DSS is unjustified,” Amnesty said. “Criticising a state governor is not a crime.”

The organisation said Pastor Olawoye’s advocacy was legitimate, citing the “shocking and deplorable” condition of roads across Ogun State. It added that authorities had a responsibility to protect fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression.

“Rather than attempting to punish activists, the government should be listening to them and addressing the concerns of the people,” the statement said.

Pastor Olawoye was detained by the DSS on Monday after being invited to its Abeokuta office for the third time. Unlike previous visits, he was reportedly not allowed to leave the facility, raising concerns among rights groups and residents.

The cleric has been a vocal critic of the state government, regularly using sermons, media appearances and community campaigns to draw attention to deteriorating road conditions under the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun.

Human rights advocates and local residents have described the detention as part of a broader pattern of intimidation against critics of the government. They allege that public figures who speak out on governance and accountability issues have increasingly faced harassment, arrests or other forms of pressure.

Authorities are yet to publicly comment on the matter.
