No fewer than 115 street beggars were arrested across various locations in Lagos State on Monday as part of ongoing enforcement operations by the state government.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement, noting that the arrests were carried out in different parts of the state to ensure compliance with existing environmental and public order laws.
In a related development, 26 members of the notorious ‘Omotaku’ group apprehended from various locations in Lagos within the last 24 hours were arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Oshodi.
The suspects pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against them and were subsequently sentenced to three months’ imprisonment each, in line with the provisions of the law.
The state government said the enforcement actions underscore its zero-tolerance stance against activities that pose threats to public safety, order, and the proper use of public spaces. Authorities added that enforcement operations would continue statewide to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly environment for all residents of Lagos.
