Mallam Nasir El‑Rufai, former governor of Kaduna State, is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of N432 billion fraud, according to sources within the anti-graft agency.
El-Rufai honored an EFCC invitation on Monday and remains in custody as investigators continue questioning, sources familiar with the matter said Tuesday. Although he presented himself voluntarily, officials said he has not yet been granted bail as interrogation continues.
The investigation follows a 2024 report by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, which accused El-Rufai’s administration, which governed from 2015 to 2023, of allegedly diverting public funds through multiple state channels.
Investigators are reviewing contracts and financial transactions executed during his eight-year tenure, according to officials briefed on the probe.
In a separate development, the Department of State Services (DSS) has filed a three-count charge against El-Rufai at the Federal High Court.
The charges include allegations of unlawful interception of telephone communications belonging to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
