The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has confirmed plans to expand its Red Line fleet with 24 additional coaches by the third quarter of 2026, amid concerns over passenger discomfort linked to air conditioning faults on the Oyingbo–Agbado service.
The authority said three new train sets each comprising eight coaches are expected to be delivered and brought into operation as part of efforts to strengthen capacity and improve reliability along the Red Line corridor.
The announcement follows recent reports and social media footage showing commuters enduring sweltering conditions after technical issues affected cooling systems on the Oyingbo–Agbado rolling stock.
In a statement, Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication, LAMATA apologised to passengers for the disruption and inconvenience caused.
Engineering teams have now been deployed to diagnose and rectify the fault, with repair works already under way. The agency said efforts are being intensified to restore the affected coaches to full operating condition as quickly as possible.
LAMATA maintained that the fleet expansion forms part of a longer-term strategy aimed at enhancing comfort and service efficiency across the network.
The authority reiterated its commitment to delivering safe and reliable rail services, adding that measures are being taken to reduce technical disruptions and improve the overall passenger experience.
Passengers have been thanked for their patience and understanding while essential repairs are carried out.
