The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has banned roadside trading around Bodija Market in the state capital, Ibadan, as part of efforts to improve order and modernise trading facilities.
The governor announced the directive on Wednesday during the commissioning of 540 newly constructed shops and a motor park at the market, named Alhaji Aderemi Jimoh Park.
He also instructed the Rule of Law Enforcement Agency to arrest anyone found violating the ban.
Mr Makinde said the project demonstrated his administration’s commitment to creating a safer and more organised trading environment. He added that traders currently operating along the roadside would be relocated into the new shops within six months.
According to the governor, the shops were built using public funds and would be allocated to beneficiaries free of charge.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government, Seun Olufade, praised the governor’s leadership, describing the development as evidence of a people-focused approach to governance.
He said the project would improve the livelihoods of traders and enhance the overall environment of the market.
Authorities say the move is part of broader efforts to regulate trading activities and improve infrastructure in one of Ibadan’s busiest commercial centres.
