The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Yusuf Sununu, has resigned his position to pursue a senatorial ambition in Kebbi State.
His resignation follows a directive by President Bola Tinubu, mandating all political appointees seeking elective offices to step down on or before March 31, 2026.
Sununu, who assumed office in the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry in November 2024, said his primary assignment was to restore public confidence in the ministry.
He emphasized the need for transparency, collaboration with technocrats, and adherence to institutional standards to rebuild trust and ensure impactful service delivery.
According to him, rebuilding the ministry’s credibility was essential to achieving the administration’s broader goal of poverty eradication and effective humanitarian interventions.
Despite these efforts, Sununu has now stepped down to contest for a Senate seat in Kebbi State.
Prior to his deployment to the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry, he served as Minister of State for Education. Before his ministerial appointments, he represented the Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, where he chaired the Committee on Healthcare Services.
