Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun East Senatorial District have endorsed Dapo Abiodun as their consensus candidate for the 2027 Senate election, setting the stage for a potential political transition within the ruling party in the state.
The endorsement was announced on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Ijebu-Ode, where party officials, grassroots mobilisers, and elected representatives converged in large numbers.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that the gathering drew members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, current and former lawmakers, local government executives, councillors, and youth and women leaders from across the district.
Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders, former senator Lekan Mustapha said the decision reflected a collective belief in Abiodun’s leadership capacity and track record in governance. He disclosed that party leaders would formally notify the governor of the endorsement and take steps to secure his nomination for the 2027 polls.
According to Mustapha, the move signals unity within the party and confidence in Abiodun’s ability to represent Ogun East effectively at the National Assembly.
Also addressing the gathering, Secretary to the State Government Tokunbo Talabi described the endorsement as “historic and unanimous,” noting that the governor’s performance in office and efforts at maintaining party cohesion made him a suitable candidate for the Senate.
Similarly, House of Representatives member Femi Ogunbanwo commended the governor’s developmental strides, expressing optimism that Abiodun would attract greater federal presence and resources to Ogun East if elected.
However, the endorsement comes amid emerging tensions within the APC in the district. Former governor and current senator Gbenga Daniel was reportedly prevented from attending a parallel stakeholders’ meeting.

Senator Daniel, who arrived at the venue in a campaign-branded vehicle, was denied entry at the gate. Addressing supporters outside the venue, he rejected the legitimacy of the meeting, insisting that any decisions taken in his absence would be “null and void.”
According to him, I am the Obalofin of Ijebuland and the Olori Omooba of Omu-Ijebu.
“Wherever President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is going, we will go. We need not to panic. All weapons fashioned against us shall not prosper”.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that the development points to a possible intra-party rift as the APC begins early positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections, with competing interests already surfacing within Ogun East political circles.
