The Lagos State Government has warned drivers, terminal officials, and transport personnel against loading goods and heavy luggage onto regulated public buses across the state, ahead of the enforcement of a new ban scheduled to begin on June 1, 2026.
LAGOS EYE NEWS reports that the directive was issued by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) following increasing complaints from commuters over discomfort, safety risks, and operational disruptions caused by the transportation of goods on public buses.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the agency’s Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, LAMATA said the decision followed a strategic meeting with heads of operations and maintenance of various bus operating companies in Lagos.
According to the agency, operators unanimously agreed that the growing practice of conveying goods and oversized luggage on regulated buses had negatively affected passenger convenience and reduced the efficiency of transport services across the state.
LAMATA warned that strict enforcement measures would commence from June 1, stressing that any driver found transporting goods after the deadline would face immediate dismissal and blacklisting from the public transport system.
The authority also cautioned terminal managers, ground staff, and LAMATA personnel against aiding or permitting the loading of goods onto buses, noting that offenders would be summarily dismissed without exception.
The agency explained that the new policy forms part of broader efforts by the Lagos State Government to restore order, improve safety standards, and ensure more efficient service delivery within the public transportation network.
Residents, commuters, transport operators, and terminal officials have therefore been advised to make alternative arrangements for the movement of goods before the enforcement date.
LAMATA reaffirmed its commitment to providing Lagos residents with a safer, more reliable, and commuter-friendly transport system across the state.
