The Lagos State Government has begun a two-day training programme to strengthen school safety and security, targeting senior teachers across the state.
The training, organised by the Lagos State Teaching Service Commission, is designed for teachers on Grade Levels 15 to 17 and aims to improve their ability to respond to safety risks in schools.
More than 200 teachers from the state’s six education districts are taking part in the programme, which is being held at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry hall in Ikeja.
TESCOM Chairperson, Victoria Mopelola Peregrino, said the initiative was intended to ensure schools remain safe environments for teaching and learning.
She urged participants to work closely with school administrators, parents, community leaders and security agencies to maintain consistent and sustainable safety measures.
Mrs Peregrino said school safety was essential for effective education, adding that teachers and students could not perform at their best in unsafe environments.
She said the training would help teachers respond to a range of risks, including emergencies, violence, cyber threats and health-related incidents, noting that teachers often serve as first responders within school communities.
TESCOM’s Permanent Secretary, Olawale Ojikutu, encouraged participants to fully engage with the programme and apply what they learned in their schools.
He said the commission had introduced a series of training programmes to align teaching standards with global best practices and improve education in the state.
The training, facilitated by NISREL TECHNIQUES, is scheduled to end on Wednesday and is expected to improve teachers’ understanding of security procedures and promote a stronger culture of safety in schools.
